FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. What do you use to edge the skis?

A. We use mainly diamond stones which remove the minimum amount of material to maximise ski edge life.

Q. What angles to you apply to the edges?

A. The edge work can be done to the specific ski's factory angles, or to any angles specified by the user, to give the best possible performance.

Q. Do you detune the edges?

A. Yes, if it is appropriate. Not detuning the tips & tails gives better turn initiation on carvers. If you do want to detune then a DiX can detune just slightly & then test etc to ensure the desired result.

Q. What is "detuning"?

A. With shorter modern carving skis there's no longer any need to detune the tips & tails of the ski. Detuned carving skis won't hold the described turning arc as the ski will stay in a flat profile instead of bending which results in the ski not carving & rotary turning force must then be applied causing a skidded turn. With proper bevel, footbeds & knee alignment your skis will perform better if sharpened the entire running length.

If you do find your skis a bit too 'hooky', rather than detuning the end 100/200mm of the tip which was common on old straight skis it's better to slightly increase the base edge angle over about 50mm around the contact point at the tip. This is the point were base & side edge angles meet the snow together. This additional base edge angle allows the edge to engage more progressively but will still give full length sharpness once the ski has been tipped.

Q. How do you reduce the ammount of work required on the base?

A. DiX can repair base damage only as necessary, & then in a localised area. This gives the best repair adhesion, retains the absorbed wax in the base, negates the need for unnecessary edge work & minimises the cost.

Q. How do you do the waxing?

A. DiX performs a hot wax/scrape to fully clean the base prior to waxing to maximise wax absorption, wax longevity, wax performance & base protection.

Q. How do you maximise wax life?

A. DiX lets the wax coat fully cool for the wax manufacturers recommended period before scraping, thus maximising wax absorption, wax longevity, wax performance & base protection.

Q. What Wax do you use?

A. DiX can uses the best universal temperature wax available, Dominator Zoom, to give the best possible glide, control & speed in the widest range of snow conditions. DiX can use Dominator Base Renew base prep wax & add additional layers of wax to maximise base protection & maximise snow time between waxings.
